Budgerigar

Melopsittacus undulatus

The possibility of seeing wild Budgerigars in Canberra is remote, and then only in a year of extreme drought, when they might seek refuge here from harsh inland conditions. Most probably all the birds seen in Canberra are escaped pets.

Many of the observations are of birds other than the wild green colour, and are of one or two birds, whereas wild Budgerigars typically occur in large flocks.

Budgerigars were recorded almost every year and it is the only common aviary bird with that distinction. There may be some under-recording, as some observers, noting by their colour or behaviour that birds have escaped, did not bother to record them. R= 112.
