Avian Influenza, also called bird flu, is a highly infectious disease caused by the Influenza A virus. It affects both domesticated birds and wild birds, and can also be spread to mammals. The H5N1 strain of the disease has killed millions of wild birds since 2021 and has spread to all continents except Australia.
For information and to keep up to date about potential outbreaks in Australia and locally, Canberra Birds recommends the ACT Government Avian Influenza web page.
We also recommend Birdlife Australia’s Avian Influenza web page for information about impacts on wild birds.
Both these sites provide the same national Emergency Animal Disease (EAD) Hotline Number of 1800 675 888
