Bracks Hole Road

Sunday 22 March 08:00
Sandra Henderson

Meet at Uriarra East reserve at 8am for carpooling. Bracks Hole Rd is off Brindabella Rd, and is a walking track down to the back of Cotter Dam. It is usually the easiest place in the ACT to see Great Crested Grebes, and in recent times the track has also become known for Red-capped Robins. Highlights in the past have also included White-bellied Sea-Eagles and Hooded Robins The walk is on a firetrail – a gentle 2km downhill to the water, which of course means we walk 2km uphill to get back to the cars.  There is very limited parking close to the locked gate.

Bring morning tea and water, and wear a hat and appropriate footwear. Register with Sandra (shirmax2931@gmail.com) providing your name and mobile number, and the name and mobile number of an emergency contact.

Post event report

The outing to Bracks Hole Road had Red-capped Robin and Great Crested Grebe as target birds for most, and quite a number of the participants had never been there before. One of the first birds seen, near the first intersection, was a male Red-capped Robin, very intent on spotting insects on the track. It was the first of several of this species seen, and Scarlet Robins also put in an appearance. As we neared the water, a White-bellied Sea-Eagle was visible in a dead tree some distance away and, although it flew further up the river, most of the group managed to see the bird. A group of four Great Crested Grebes kept to the far side of the water, and several Australasian Darters and Little Pied Cormorants were identified. Eurasian Coots and Australian Wood Ducks were added to the list when we were able to view the inlet. A couple of small groups of Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos were seen high overhead. On the walk back to the cars we encountered a few other visitors, all hoping to see the grebes. Those at the back of our group were delighted to find Eastern Shrike-tit along the track – an unexpected bonus. Sandra Henderson
