September meeting

Wed 13 September 2023 07:30pm

Jack Holland - Leaden and Satin Flycatchers
Nicki Taws - 20 years of K2C and Birdwatch surveys; how COG has helped demonstrate the value of woodland restoration for birds.

The September meeting will be a normal face-to-face one held at our usual venue. Attendees should heed social distancing and good hygiene practice etc, and use their common sense and stay home if they have COVID symptoms. Mask wearing is recommended.

First there will be a Bird of the Month presentation by Jack Holland on the “Leaden and Satin Flycatchers”, in his view the most difficult pair of local species to properly identify, particularly outside of the breeding season.

The main presentation will be by Nicki Taws on “20 years of K2C and Birdwatch surveys; how COG has helped demonstrate the value of woodland restoration for birds”.

Many COG members have participated for more than 10 years in surveys of the K2C region south of Canberra, and for more than 20 years in Birdwatch surveys to the north-west of the ACT. The surveys are investigating the effects of conservation actions, specifically grazing exclusion and revegetation, on the woodland bird community, with some very positive results, as Nicki will outline. They also offer the opportunity for participants to visit some beautiful areas on private property that are not open to the general public.
