Canberra Nature Park maps

The ACT Government (currently the Parks and Conservation Service) often provide useful online maps showing the boundaries and context of the various reserves and parks that make up Canberra Nature Park. Finding them can be tricky because their online location and presentation changes as often as the Government Directorates are reshuffled.  In October 2025 the maps of most or all reserves can be found via the following link (scroll to the bottom of each Reserve page and expand the map):

This checklist is based on Birds of the ACT: Two Centuries of Change by Steve Wilson OAM, published by the Canberra Ornithologists Group, Canberra, 1999. The Checklist covers 286 species.

List of ‘unusual’ birds as at May 2013

Basically a list of species which have fewer than ten endorsed records of probably different birds in the previous ten years in the ACT. NOTE: for full description of the selection process see Canberra Bird Notes, June 2013 pp 186- 187.

List of ‘unusual’ birds as at August 2020

A list of ‘unusual birds’ in the ACT compiled by the COG Rarities Panel.

Using COG's Data

COG holds a wealth of data about the birds in its Area of Interest, accumulated through almost 60 years of observations. Some of this information on any particular species is available via the graph icons on the Bird Info page.

Wider or more specialised information can be accessed for projects that support COG’s objectives in conservation, research and education. If you have a project that could benefit from access to these data, you can apply to COG using the form linked below. Please send completed forms to cogoffice@canberrabirds.org.au.

Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the ACT – November 2017

COG’s Annotated Checklist of the Birds of the ACT was updated in November 2017.  It is currently only available in PDF format. This version is dated 22 November 2017. It contains 305 taxa.

The ‘Status’ column reflects the likelihood that an experienced birder would record the species during a day of bird observing, at the right time of year, in the appropriate habitat.

Species  marked * are  classified  by  the  Canberra  Ornithologists  Group  (COG)  as  ‘unusual’ birds in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT.  Please submit an Unusual Bird Report form for these species and for any species not included in this checklist. The Checklist identifies threatened species, i.e. those declared Endangered or Vulnerable in the ACT or NSW.  For more detailed information on the status of the birds of the ACT please see COG’s Annual Bird Report, produced annually and available here (by scrolling down to the Archives and looking for the most recent edition).

The taxonomy and nomenclature used for this checklist (with a small number of exceptions) is Birdlife Australia’s Working List of Australian Birds, version 2.1.
