Sulphur-crested Cockatoos are very conspicuous, noisy, and gregarious birds that are commonly seen in Canberra’s suburbs and gardens. They are mainly ground feeders and can form into large flocks to feed on open spaces or road verges, notably in autumn when fallen acorns are abundant. They roost communally in large eucalypts in and around the suburbs.
Sulphur-crested Cockatoos are most abundant in autumn and winter. Numbers drop steadily in spring as birds migrate back to the ranges to breed. Local breeding occurs, however, with records of birds inspecting nest hollows in mature eucalypts in August, and dependent young recorded from mid-December to late autumn and into July. Overall numbers have almost tripled over the duration of the survey but have levelled-off in recent years. R=7. BR=19.
